Teething could be considered a frustrating experience for babies as well as parents at which the baby's teeth start to erupt the gums, it usually occurs between 6 to 24 months of age .

The first tooth starts to erupt at the age of 6 months, but in some cases it might be earlier or later.

When babies start teething, irritability, tender and swollen gum may be observed. Saliva spillage which may cause rashes around the mouth may occur.
But it's important to know that teething itself is not associated with fever, runny nose, diarrhea, cough or rashes all over the body.

Easing the teething process
Here are some tips to keep in mind when your baby is teething:

  • Wipe your baby's face often with a cloth to remove the drool and prevent rashes from developing.

  • Give your baby something to chew on. Make sure it's big enough so that it can't be swallowed and that it can't break into small pieces. A clean wet washcloth placed in the freezer for 30 minutes makes a handy teething aid just be sure to wash it after each use.

  • Rubber teething rings are also good, but avoid ones with liquid inside because they may break or leak. If you use a teething ring, be sure to take it out of the freezer before it becomes rock hard you don't want to bruise those already swollen gums!

  • If your baby seems irritable, acetaminophen may help but always consult your doctor first. Never place an aspirin against the tooth, and don't rub alcohol on your baby's gums

  • Use teething gels to be massaged into the gums with a clean finger can provide fast-acting and targeted relief. Look for ones that are sugar-free and color-free, and make sure you check the dosage instructions and expiry date. (Always read the label for use instructions and ages).
